I’ve been involved with AMEE since 2012, and I can say with confidence that it’s a fantastic professional organization. As the largest international organization for medical and health professions education, AMEE represents about 5,000 members from over 1,000 institutions and 150 nations. The annual AMEE education research conference is held each year at the end of August in a European city, and is always worth the trip (if you’re lucky enough to find some funding to attend).
The benefits of AMEE are many, but probably the best benefit is the opportunity to attend the annual meeting to present educational research, present and attend faculty development workshops, and network with likeminded educators and researchers from around the globe. Based on my personal and professional interactions at AMEE, I was invited to write several AMEE Guides and was asked to join a number of productive research teams.
SMHS’s institutional membership is a great benefit for GW faculty, giving us access to tons of AMEE resources, including access to MedEdPublish, Ask AMEE, and the BEME Collaboration, as well as discounts on AMEE Guides and opportunities to serve on numerous AMEE Committees.
I’ve been fortunate enough to attend about a half dozen AMEE conferences over the years in several amazing cities, including Vienna, Austria; Barcelona, Spain; Lyon, France; Milan, Italy; and Glasgow, Scotland. I’ve also had the opportunity to serve on the AMEE Research Committee and was the inaugural Chair of the educational Research Grants Program for several years. Based on my service to organization and the field of medical and health professions education, I was inducted as a Fellow of AMEE in 2019.
My participation in AMEE has opened many doors for me in my career, and so I encourage anyone who’s interested in medical and health professions education and educational research to take advantage of our institutional membership and GET INVOLVED today!

I was fortunate to attend the AMEE conference prior to the pandemic and was impressed and pleased by what I learned from being there. The AMEE group is THE group to follow if you really want to become an educational scholar. They bring together healthcare professional educators from all over the globe and have contributed significantly to the advancement of health professions education. I am so glad to have found this group and to have attended the conference. I am glad that GW provides faculty with this opportunity."
